In this article, you will learn, How to configure and use the Double Opt-in (DOI) process for marketing consent. This process ensures that members must explicitly confirm their consent to receive advertising before they are added to your distribution list. This increases legal certainty and the quality of your contact data.

Fast Lane
- Go to Communication / Administration / Templates in the menu.
- Create a new email template and select the type Marketing consent.
- Adjust the text and save the template.
- Go to Settings / Notification rules and create a new rule.
- Select Marketing consent as the event, define the channels, and link the template you just created.
Create email template
For the Double Opt-in process to work, the system requires a special email template containing the confirmation link.
- Navigate to Communication / Administration / Templates and click on Create email template.
-
Select the type of template from the dropdown menu:
Marketing consent.
Note: The system automatically loads a proposal text. Alternatively, you can use the standard template and start completely from scratch. - The editor opens. It is important that the setting "Confirmation of marketing consent" is selected as additional member information (this usually happens automatically with the selected template type).
Important placeholders:
Make sure the following placeholders are included in your template to ensure
functionality:
-
#MarketingConsentLink: This link leads to the external confirmation page. In the standard template, this link is often already embedded behind the text "Confirm here". -
#MarketingConsentChannels: This lists the categories and channels for which the member has given consent.
Save your template once you are satisfied with the text.
Configure notification rule
After the template is created, you must define when it should be sent. This is done via the notification rules.
- Go to the Notification rules configuration and click on Create notification rule.
- In the Event field, select the option Marketing consent.
-
Select communication channels: Determine for which channels
the DOI process should apply (e.g., Email, App, SMS).
Important: The confirmation request is always sent via email, even if consent was given for App or SMS. Letter and Phone call are excluded from the DOI process. - Set the dispatch type to Automatic dispatch without confirmation (automatic).
- Under Communication Template, select the email template you created in the previous step (this must have the tag "Confirmation of marketing consent").
- Save the rule.
Functionality and member view
As soon as the notification rule is active, the following automation applies:
- Trigger: When a member gives their consent for marketing communication (e.g., via the self-service area or the app), the system sends the configured email.
- Categories: The DOI process works for the categories Marketing, Extended marketing consent, and Prize draw.
-
Pending consent: After the initial consent and before clicking
the confirmation link, the member is in a "pending" status. During this time,
the member is still excluded from marketing communication.
In the employee area, this is visualized by envelope icons in the communication settings. - Deadline: If the member does not confirm consent within 7 days, the status is reset. The system then acts as if the member never gave consent.
This is what the member sees:
The member receives an email asking for confirmation. Clicking the link leads
to an external page summarizing the selected channels. There, the member can
finally Confirm or Decline.
Only after this second confirmation (Double Opt-in) is the member included in marketing communication.
