Device overview
The Honeywell Genesis XP 7680g is a presentation scanner that reads QR codes and barcodes. In the software you use it for check-in and check-out. The scanner is connected to the computer via USB and works as a virtual COM port.
Before you connect the scanner, put the included black O-ring onto the end of the cable. Once the cable is plugged into the scanner, the O-ring must no longer be visible. This keeps the housing IP52-compliant.
Install the driver
The scanner needs the Honeywell HSM USB Serial Driver. The driver is installed together with the Device Manager, so it is usually already on the computer.
If the scanner does not appear as a COM port later on, reinstall the driver: unplug the scanner, run setup.bat from the driver package as administrator and plug the scanner back in. If you do not have the driver package, contact support.
Configure the scanner
Scan the following barcodes one after the other in the order shown. While scanning, cover all other barcodes so that the scanner only reads the one you want.
Important: The first two barcodes reset the scanner to its factory settings and permanently delete all custom settings. The software needs this factory state to work with the scanner.
-
Remove custom defaults: deletes all custom settings.
-
Activate defaults: restores the factory settings.
-
Add CR suffix: adds a carriage return (Enter) after every scan.
-
USB serial emulation: switches the scanner to serial mode, so that it appears as a COM port.
Check the COM port in Windows
Unplug the scanner and plug it back in so that the USB serial setting becomes active. Then open the Windows Device Manager. Under Ports (COM & LPT) the scanner now appears as Honeywell Scanning Solution with a COM port number, for example COM3. You need this number in the next step.
The screenshot shows a Windows system set to German.
You also find VID and PID in the Windows Device Manager: open the properties of the scanner, go to the Details tab and select Hardware Ids. An entry such as USB\VID_0C2E&PID_1014 means VID 0x0C2E and PID 0x1014.
Add the scanner in the software
Add the scanner as a device in the software:
- Open Settings / Access control / Device Manager.
- Select the Device Manager of the computer the scanner is connected to and open Add device from the three-dot menu.
- Fill in the following fields:
- Device description: a name that tells you which scanner this is, for example Check-in reception.
- Task: the use case, for example Check In, Automated check-in/out or Manual check-in/out.
- Device model: Honeywell Genesis 7680.
- Connection type: USB (virtual COM-Port).
-
VID and PID:
0x0C2Eand0x1014. Always enter the values in the format0xfollowed by four characters. - Alternatively, leave VID and PID empty and enter only the COM port from the Windows Device Manager.
- Save the device.
Troubleshooting
- The scanner appears as USB Input Device instead of under Ports (COM & LPT): the USB serial emulation is not active. Scan the USB serial emulation barcode again, then unplug the scanner and plug it back in.
- No COM port in the Windows Device Manager: reinstall the driver, even if it was already installed before.
- The scanner does not read the barcodes in this article: scan them from the {DEV} user guide (PDF).
- The scanner does not read any barcodes from a screen: an earlier configuration can block reading from screens. Print the barcodes and scan the printout.
