Device description
The Newland FR-40 / FR-4080 is a 1D/2D barcode scanner that connects with a USB or RS-232 cable. In the software you select it as the device model Newland FR-40. This name covers both model designations.
Supported connections and tasks
The software reads the scanner through one of these connection types:
- USB (virtual COM-Port): the scanner is connected by USB and works as a virtual COM port. The setup barcodes in this article configure this variant.
- COM: classic serial COM port (RS-232). Use it only if the scanner is connected with a serial cable. The setup barcodes in this article do not cover this variant.
You can use the scanner for these tasks:
- Check In, Check-out and Automated check-in/ out
- Class check-in and Class check-in/booking
- Start time tracking, Stop Time-Tracking and Start/Stop Time-Tracking
- Touchpoint Self-Service
Prepare the scanner
- Unpack the scanner and check that all parts are included.
- Connect the scanner to the PC on which your Device Manager runs.
- Scan the setup barcodes below in the given order. They set the scanner up for the connection type USB (virtual COM-Port).
Warning: Make sure that only the barcode you want to scan is visible. Cover all other barcodes to avoid faulty scans.
1. Enter Setup
Always scan this first. It starts the setup mode.
2. Restore All Factory Defaults
Resets the scanner to its factory settings, including as the terminating character.
3. Enable AIM ID Prefix
Adds the AIM ID prefix to every scanned code.
4. USB CDC
Activates the virtual COM port mode.
5. Exit Setup
Always scan this last. It applies the settings and ends the setup mode.
Add the scanner in the software
- Open Settings / Access control / Device Manager.
- Open the three-dot menu (⋮) of the Device Manager the scanner is connected to and select Add device. The New device dialog opens.
- Enter a Device description, for example the place where the scanner is used.
- Under Device model, select Newland FR-40. You can type "Newland" to filter the list.
- Select the Task the scanner should perform.
- Under Connection type, select USB (virtual COM-Port). This is the option that matches the USB CDC setup barcode. Select COM only for a serial connection.
- In the Configure device connection step, the field Connection type is preset to USB: enter the VID and PID of the scanner.
- For the scanner in USB CDC mode (the setup barcodes above), the manufacturer's manual gives VID 0x1EAB and PID 0x2506.
- To find the values yourself: on Windows, open Device Manager, locate the scanner (for example under Ports (COM & LPT)), open its properties, go to the Details tab and choose Hardware Ids. An entry such as
USB\VID_1EAB&PID_2506means VID0x1EABand PID0x2506(format:0xplus the four characters afterVID_/PID_).
- Go through the remaining steps, such as Edit options, and click Create.
Then test the scanner: scan a barcode for the task you selected, for example a member's check-in code, and check that the software processes it.
Tips to avoid errors
- If Newland FR-40 is missing from the Device model list, the Device Manager page is probably shown in the old design. Click Switch to the new design on the page and add the device again.
- If the scanner is not recognised, check the cable, the COM port in the device configuration and whether the Device Manager is running on the PC. Restart the PC if needed.
- Scan only the configuration barcodes you need, so that you do not change other scanner settings by accident.
- If the scanner does not appear under Ports (COM & LPT) in Windows Device Manager, install the manufacturer's USB CDC driver (available from Newland's website) and reconnect the scanner.
